When I was heavily involved with graphic design work, I was approached to create a series of catalogue covers for the owner of a leather and pet supply manufacturer. He had tried other designers’ ideas but none of them appealed to him, until he saw the mock up I did for one of his product magazines. It was a felt pen rendering in a monochrome of warm grays, with the design layout including the front and back covers. He was more than elated with the final product, as he asked me to do four more!
This illustration of the boy feeding his dog was my first attempt at a coloured pencil portrait, and I found an amazing range in graduation of tones and colours using this medium. After completing this portrait I was definitely hooked, and I love to work with this medium as much as I can. The manufacturer still has the framed original gracing his front entrance wall as you come in, and was displayed on the cover of his pet supplies’ catalogue for years to come. |
